In the late 1980s, O. Olovnikov’s theory was confirmed by American researchers Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Jack W. Szostak, and Carol W. Greider (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 2009, awarded “for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase”). They identified the mechanism by which chromosomes are copied during cell division and how they are protected from degradation.

Scientists discovered that the shorter the telomeres, the older the cell, and conversely, if telomerase activity, which restores telomeres, remains high and telomere length is constantly maintained, the cell does not age. Advances in medical science over the past 100 years have almost doubled life expectancy in developed countries.

Telomerase theory of aging

The fact that human telomeres shorten with age has been known for more than 20 years. People with shorter telomeres are considered to be at increased risk of premature mortality.

R. Cawthon et al. demonstrated that among 60-year-old study participants, the 25% with the longest telomeres had a twofold lower risk of death compared with the 25% of participants with the shortest telomeres.

R. Cawthon had access to a unique database containing preserved blood samples collected 20 years earlier. Over many years (since the publication of Cawthon R.’s data), these results have neither been successfully reproduced nor disproven.
